The criteria for 6th and 7th grade A1H is far too low and I suspect that there are a good number of kids who are struggling with the class. Some teachers report that parents don’t expunge Cs and let their kids carry on to geometry and the same thing happens in geometry. Some parents are more concerned that their kid is in the most accelerated math then they are their kid learning the math.

DS took Algebra 1 H in 7th, kids either did really well or they struggled. There was very little in between. The kids who were ready, were ready. Some had been in math enrichment but we know DS friends had not taken any enrichment and did well in 7th grade A1H. They all worked harder than DS, we heard about the homework load from their parents, but they could handle the class.

I would not have my kid take A1H in 7th grade unless they were in the 95th percentile on the MAP and passed advanced on the SOL. Rushing foundational math is not a good idea. Taking math early and needing a tutor or stressing over the class is not necessary or healthy. Kids get into great colleges with their highest math being Calculus every year.

Nope our school did not have any county assessment. Some principal placements though.

The county assessment was optional if schools felt like parents needed more info before making a decision. Not all gave it.

The only binding criteria was iready/sol. If a principal fudged that for a parent, that sucks for the kid who probably isn’t ready and is likely struggling.
