OP here again.

My kids will be set for a high performing, excellent high school because that’s where I teach. They’ll be able to go for free to a really exceptional school (again, not in DMV). I just need to get them through this crappy elementary school.

Great idea! We’ll move away from our friends (like family), happy jobs…easy peasy!

OP here. My kids are being plenty challenged at home…they’re outside, never on screens, building stuff, Boy Scouts and chess competitions.

I mean during the day…I wish they were at private schools and were known and loved. I wish they were playing outside on cool structures and not old, falling down soccer posts.

OP, I understand how you feel; there are creative solutions. Look into small religious schools and hybrid schools. Lots of people are dissatisfied and can’t afford private.

I can’t get them to those schools without quitting my job. I have no leeway. I’d have to hire someone to drive them to the nearest town to back.

Lots of podcasts for kids to learn history and science

My parents only sent my brother to private, they couldn’t afford for the rest of us, but the oldest kid sets the pace and they can help the younger ones too. Not ideal, but an idea. In the DMV you can get a great parochial or Christian classical for about 14-17k. Also the 7th day Adventist school is weirdly affordable (8 or 9k) and I heard it’s pretty solid.

Facilitate their friendships with kids from families who value education. Makes a world of difference. Even if they are poor and immigrant, culture of hard work matters.

Sounds like your children need to be evaluated for special education. Saying that "not being challenged" is causing "behaviors" is just a cop out.

We tutor and supplement at home, but what they're learning is so far below grade level. All of the classroom kids do poorly on their standardized tests because they aren't taught that material because some kids are still illiterate in 3rd grade, can't do basic math. The teacher is basically only teaching remedial math. I have 3 kids and 20k a year for private is just out of our budget. I wish charter schools or magnet schools were allowed.

Yes! It took me a long time to realize that the teacher was teaching the lowest kids and neglecting the middle to top achievers. I guess I just assumed being in a well-off, well-educated area must provide my kid with a better education than I got in a small town full of high school drop outs and alcoholics.

I think in elementary school, what you do at home matters much more than where you do at school. Supplement as much as you can. I love Beast Academy for math, and just reading for reading.

We had a good experience with Wyzant for our then first-grader. I can't compare it to any other website, and for that matter can't compare the one tutor we used with the tens of thousands of other tutors on Wyzant. But precisely because there are so many, you should be able to find someone who works well for you, especially for elementary school, where you don't need a huge amount of subject-matter expertise.
