UMass is huge - so not a good comparator. UVM has great D1 hockey, soccer, but it's a smaller school, so not going to have the the big tailgate culture that the bigger schools have.

So Stowe is about an hour from Burlington and several other resorts within 1.5 hours, people skate in frozen ponds and go fat biking when it’s 5 degrees out. I would think the only places that are going to match th winter recreation attitude of Vermonters and have d1 athletics are Minnesota, Colorado, and Colorado state, and they’re all much larger. Dartmouth is in a good location for that, but I have no idea if the kids are outdoorsy.

I agree with those who have same JMU. I know one is in New England and on in Virginia, but they have a lot of similarities. One of the biggest differences is that JMU has more in-state students than UVM does, which could be a pro or con depending on personal preferences. JMU is also a little larger, although that is why it has the DI big sports your DC is looking for.

You nailed it. If his baseline is Wisconsin or Michigan he will have to compromise something.

Will be either size or sports? If size, then Utah or Colorado. But sports still won't be the same.

If he is okay with D3 sports, he might want to check out Ithaca College. Otherwise, I agree with PP’s recommendations of UMass, Syracuse, and Buffalo.

My kid ended up at UVM, but considered UNH. One reaction I had when touring was that the sports culture at UNH was quite robust.

Just because a good friend of mine went there, check out Ohio University in Athens.

JMU is great for sports. The college town, Harrisonburg is well situated for outdoors.

I'd second the mention of Appalachian State.

University of Montana, Montana State, and University of Wyoming might be a good fit. Although, the charms of Cheyenne might not appeal.
