This happened to be in my mid40s. Had to get an ultrasound to rule out other causes but ended up on the mini pill to slow down the bleeding.

Before starting on the pill, I took advil every 4 hours to slow the bleeding. Also ended up with anemia because of all the blood lost with the heavy periods so had to take iron.

Contact your GYN. I went through this a few years ago. One particular day, I bled through multiple tampons in an hour. I was so scared I almost went to the ER. Then it slowed down a bit so I messaged my GYN who had me come in (a day or so later). She told me heavy bleeding can be very common in peri-menopause but that they still need to rule out anything serious. I did have a fibroid and polyp so I had a procedure to remove them and biopsy of the uterine lining (negative thankfully!). I also was put on Aygestin to stop bleeding at that first visit. I was very anemic so I also needed to do iron supplements. The Aygestin worked wonders but has left me with significant weight gain. I’m trying to stop now and hoping I’m in menopause.

A hormonal IUD fixed this issue for me.

The ultrasound showed a cyst on one ovary and a endometrial polyp. The doctor gave me progesterone to stop the bleeding. This worked… initially. Had about 12 days of no bleeding, energy levels picking up, starting to feel good… and now this week I have started to bleed again. Not quite as bad as last time, but still a bit on the heavy side. Calling the doctor on Monday if it doesn’t taper off. I will probably need to have the polyp removed- that was what she thought was causing the excessive bleeding. But I was hoping I could wait until later in Spring.

I think you need to take the minipill till you hit the menopause.

Medical care, yes. ER? No.

Bleeding through a pad in an hour and clots larger than a quarter are actually the thresholds that my GYNs office told me to watch for. If I experienced either, I was told to go to ER.

I had this issue.

Call OB first thing in the morning. Have them order bloodwork and a vaginal ultrasound (standard protocol) without an appt.

The blood work will tell you how bad off you are - whether you have too much blood loss and anemia. Do you crave ice chips? That’s a sign of anemia. Are you really tired? Do you get out of breath taking a shower or going up/down stairs? That is a sign of too much blood loss.

Doctors will only treat symptoms until they know what is causing the heavy period. The blood work and Ultrasound will tell them how to proceed. No need to waste time with a doctors visit to walk out with the orders for the tests you need.

I was borderline for a blood transfusion, ended up getting IV Iron transfusions, and a Mirena IUD. No problems since.

Agree with this all. Consider taking shepherds purse supplement in shortterm to lessen bleeding while you evaluate
