Service and trade jobs are a plenty. Office jobs, not so much. Everyone I know that has been out of a job, has been out of a job for 6+ months before they find a new one including my husband. I'm terrified one of us is going to get downsized again.

I grew up in Guinea. Guinea is a very poor country in West Africa. I moved here 10 years ago after winning the green card lottery. I graduated #3 in my electrical engineering program. I took me 2 years to find a job as a technician not engineer. And that was a miracle and actually a "success" story in my country. Why do I bring this up? I genuinely feel sorry for American kids because (I hope I am wrong) I feel the US is headed toward an growing economy that does not create jobs. In my country the expectation once you graduated is unemployment. In the US the expectation is a good job. Thats an amazing privilege that Americans have always enjoy. And I hope it stays that way. In my culture we have strong family support. You are unlikely to go hungry or homeless because you don't have a job. In the US I am not sure to be honest. Life is in this country is very hard and if you are unemployed for extended period of time homelessness, depression and despair.

This is sadly true. The only sector that's has consistently been adding job has been the healthcare sector. Unfortunately we don't see a lot of men signing up to be nurses etc. I think high school boys should be advised to strongly consider nursing, PAs etc.

Having said that, I am also afraid we are starting to see a familiar playbook for Wall street and private equity. Namely, flood a sector with the help of media and government with so many workers at a rapid pace so that supply eventually exceed demand and once wages start decreasing import overseas workers to depress the wages even further. Healthcare is not going to be immune to this playbook. In fact private equity is racing and praying that AI can quickly make significant inroad in healthcare so that they can come with the broom and sweep away as many healthcare professionals as possible.

The barrier of entry is often a college degree and willingness to complete a certification program. Some districts are really desperate.

I’m a career changer and I now mentor others. The biggest issue (to me) is the revolving door. We can always find people willing to try teaching, but we can’t find people willing to stay. People exiting often cite working conditions as their reason for leaving (lack of work/life balance, unsustainable responsibilities). They don’t mention pay often.

But “education” does answer the question “where are the jobs?”

Nah, you are not there by yourself, and there are very bright lights - you know those portable ones that police sometimes puts on the side of the road. But you don’t want a major road/ bridge/ tunnel closure for something routine when there is significant traffic, thus 2 am - 4 am window.

Law enforcement.

They have signing bonuses from $3,000 - $70,000.

Starting salaries are in a range from $65,000 - $85,000 and they’re rising.

They offer pensions, plus deferred compensation plans with a match.

Overtime pay can easily provide a young person with a six figure income.

Statisticians. Very hard to find good ones. You will be shocked by the high number of stats professionals who are incapable of reading and understanding statistical output. The challenge though is finding a company looking for a Statistician. If you do, you have a high chance of being selected if you can explain basic statistical results in plain English.
