Trains

This is a cliche but it’s remained constant for almost the past 5 years. It started with steam engines and wooden trains, then evolved into metro and maglev trains. The US is very disappointing in terms of trains.

Other interests have come and gone including Pokemon, Minecraft, cats, etc

He's 20 and is majoring in international affairs with a concentration in security policy

11 year old DD:
Bluey: has perfect recall for anything that's happened in any episode and uses the episodes and their themes to try to connect with people. Also can tell you any episode that has a "glitch" (or a perceived one) in the animation.

It is really hard to distill down to common interests with teens with autism. It’s easier when they are younger. Plus, it changes and they’ll pick up a new one. I know several young adults on the spectrum. Here is a list of special interests:

Coins
A specific historical period
Video games and computers (can probably generalize as common)
Anime (can probably generalize as common)
Uranium glass
Fashion and make up
Swords
A certain musical group
Art and artists
Shakespeare
WWII tanks
