My brothers have raised 4 kids in a spread-out county. Lots of distance. Kids spend the weekend at one another's house. They are dropped off for the weekend.

If your DD's friends truly live 1 hour away, those are sleepover or whole day excursion friends 99% of the time.

For an hour long trip I dont expect a really short playdate. How old are the kids? Make friends closer to where you live or extend the time of the playdate. Also meet halfway.

Why are you so angry? I thought urban living made people aggressive but that doesn’t seem to be my observation lately.

Unless the kid were my kid’s bff and my kid was really asking, I think a playdate with a friend one hour away isn’t realistic. I think for “get together and play” situations, it’s easier to play with neighbors or friends who live close by.

I think it could make sense to invite kids who live farther away to a birthday party of meet up for a outing that includes the parents (ice-skating, whatever). For older kids who are very close, maybe a sleepover so the dropping-off parent can go home. But unless it’s your kid’s only option or you’re really isolated… not all friends need to be seen outside of school or activities.
