Its super easy to tell a stranger you would hypothetically go on this trip.

Anyone paying attention to the news/words coming out of Trump/Rubio's mouth know the rhetoric toward Colombia and Cuba have escalated significantly over the past few days. It would certainly give me pause if I had a trip planned.

Aren't there supposed to be gangs everywhere as we are repeatedly told by asylum seekers?

OP has no plans to travel to the border. No tourists go there. And the troops are there because they are concerned about migrants from Venezuela. They're not there to wage war with anybody.

Try reading the newspaper before you make such categorically ignorant statements. Trump has threatened Colombia. I have travelled to Colombia a dozen times for work and think it's a beautiful country both for tourists and business professionals, and I wouldn't take my kids there now with all the global uncertainty and the volatility of this administration for fear of not being able to get back.

I hate Trump as much as the next guy, but you sound unhinged. I have a trip planned next week to another country in the region that Trump is on record that he doesn't like one bit, and guess what? I'm going. Trump ain't stopping me.

OP only you can decide this. Personally, I would go, but make plans for if you were unavoidably detained.

For what it’s worth I went to Bogota three years ago and had a lovely business trip there and was surprised at how beautiful the city was and how upscale some parts were. Also, I’ve traveled a lot, and I have brown hair and speak Spanish, so I blend in a bit more, but if you haven’t, you’d be amazed at what Americans said to me in the US before I left, and acted like I was going to a war torn country or Lebanon or El Salvador in the 80s or something like that.

You will be fine, but take precautions, plan to spend an extra few days there if necessary, have copies of your passport, know the number and address of the American embassy, etc, etc.

If tiu have travel insurance it might be worth checking to see if it covers anything — political instability is often excluded. For me, it might depend on whether I could cancel now and get full refund, but if I wait 2 weeks I’ll be out of luck.
