I’d have cheese and crackers for dinner on the couch then go to a Christmas Eve church service.
Christmas Day morning I would get up at normal time because we have 2 dogs but then enjoy a coffee in my pajamas. After shower I would take the dogs for a nice long hike. Lunch then Netflix.

On Christmas Eve I would drive around to see lights or maybe go down to see the national tree. Grab a hot chocolate and stroll around a bit. I’d go home and make a nice fish dinner for myself.

On Christmas morning I’d bake cinnamon rolls or make French toast, have coffee, and listen to music. I’d do some fun projects around the house, like hanging pictures (immediate gratification project) or do an art/craft project while either listening to music or a podcast. I’d go for a walk in nature in the afternoon. Then I’d go see a late-afternoon movie (nothing sad like Hamnet) and get Thai or Chinese takeout on my way home. I’d probably watch something else after I got home and eat while watching that.

Somewhere in there I might write a few New Years cards to people I didn’t get cards out to yet. I might jump on a call to someone else who was spending the day alone, if I knew someone I was close to like that. But generally I’d have a peaceful holiday doing things I like and find relaxing.

I’m sorry you’re going through a separation. Treat the holiday as a chance to reset and look ahead, not back. Christmas Eve and Day can be as big or as little a deal as you want to make it, depending how you feel.

Have a delicious and indulgent breakfast, go for a winter hike, journal, make some soup, phone a friend I hadn’t talked to in awhile, watch movies while doing crafts or paint my nails/spa day.

I would stock up on some
pastries and other bites and chilled drinks.

I would sleep in. I would go to a nice cafe for coffee late afternoon.
I would get a nice dinner, and drive around to see the lights.

But dont you have any relative you could spend a little time with?

I suppose go to movies but that’s only two hours.

I'd go to bed early Xmas eve, enjoying the knowledge that I would be waking up to a completely free day without responsibilities or obligations!

On Xmas day, I'd find a new show to binge-watch. Light breakfast and lunch. I'd probably pull a bunch of Trader Joes appetizers from the freezer and make myself a combo platter of fun food! Eat while binge-watching the new show. Go outside and take a walk around the neighborhood, maybe a few laps if it's not outrageously windy or cold.

Then would come inside and probably prep fresh ingredients for a dinner I like that requires more time than I usually have. Nothing fancy (I'm not an ambitious cook.) Just something more complicated than I usually make. I'd probably listen to chill music while cooking.

Then I'd alternate more binge-watching with making dinner and eating it. Long, hot shower and to bed early again.

Going through a separation. Yes, typically we celebrate. Obviously not going to happen this year.

Well, yes, with their respective families.

I did Christmas Eve and Christmas alone a couple of years ago and it was perfect. A long walk, a good dinner, a candlelight service…then in the morning pastries, great coffee, a good book, another walk…just a really good, grounded couple of days. For some reason it reminded me of being a kid at Christmas. Like there was a little bit of magic again, maybe because I could just sit and be present for a change.

Not sure where you live but could you go down to see the National Christmas tree and have coffee in the morning. Hit a museum on the way back to the subway. Stop back by home to freshen up. Go to the movies and pick up dinner on the way home and then in theory you'll be tired and can chill the rest of the evening and night.

I love time to myself and never have an issue spending it. I'd probably go for a hike in the afternoon. Pick up Thai takeout on the way home. Put on a movie and start doing a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle. In the morning, I'd wake up late and keep working on my puzzle into the afternoon, when I'd have a nap, read a book and maybe go see Hamnet, which I've been dying to see.
