But that same year, a parent from the same preschool as my friend spoke with PSD as to whether she should send a first choice letter to a different TT (not HM) and PSD said she got a good feedback so was encouraged to go for it. She did but did not get in to that TT.

I am guessing sometimes feedback or PSD’s guidance is not a guarantee. If your preschool is a feeder to a school, then that is “almost” guaranteed but if not, everything is very fluid.

Agree with this. Know people that got good feedback (like basically you're in) at Brearley and Trinity and came up empty handed at time of admissions. Ended up at a hill school

I heard same situation from people for Trinity last year.

Any explanations as to why this happened? So these people presumably didn't have time to direct a first choice letter somewhere else?
