Admit rate for EA deferrals to some T20s can be as high as 15%. And that depends on how you stack up against the other deferrals.

Here’s a story with a happy ending:

-Deferred Cornell two years ago. This was the dream school.
-Waitlisted in March.
-Chose her school by May 1. Was offered a lot of scholarship money.
-Then at the end of June, offered a transfer option from Cornell. Basically it’s a guaranteed entrance sophomore year.

She had a great freshman year. Adjusted to college and managing her time in a less intense place. And we saved money a lot of money. She decided to follow through with the transfer option.

Entered Cornell this fall and is enjoying it. Really likes her classes. In the end, it worked out. If she had decided to stay at her freshman school, I’d say the same this. It all worked out.

What, if anything, did your kids submit to admissions after they were deferred/waitlisted? Just a simple LOCI and grade update or something more, like an additional recommendation or substantive essay showing the admissions committee something "new" to consider?

From what I can recall, the deferred kid sent a LOCI and a grade update. The second kid simply said she wanted to stay on the WL, which is as good as sending a LOCI.

Neither submitted anything else.

Kids are deferred from EA all the time.

Ex: Applied SCEA to Georgetown, EA to Michigan, and EA to Wisconsin.

Deferred then accepted to Michigan.

Deferred then accepted to Wisconsin.

Deferred then waitlisted then accepted to Georgetown.

Deferred at Swarthmore, then: accepted by Swarthmore, Brown, JHU, Rice, Lafayette, Lehigh, and UVM; waitlisted by Yale and WashU; rejected by Tufts. Ended up at Swarthmore in the end.

I don't know if you count UVA as a "top school," but I had two kids apply there. One was deferred ED but got in RD. Another was waitlisted RD and got off the wait-list. Talk about luck.

Deferred at Michigan, happy as a clam at another OOS flagship, 50-70th, and with the scholarship they received, we can cover grad school with 529 funds.
