I am a sucker for classics and here’s what my then 10 yo boy liked:
- The Space Cadet, and Have Spacesuit, Will Travel by Robert Heinlein
- Three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog) but don’t get the Hugh Lawrie edition, get it read by someone else (professional book reader)
- I, Robot and other stories by Isaak Asimov
- Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (I think it was a radio play by BBC)
- White Fang by Jack London, as well as the other one about a dog I forgot the name

We also enjoy an author McCall Hoyle. We love her animal based books. Just Gus is our favorite. Stella a close second.
I feel like some can be sad like animal books can be, but not a bad thing, just fair warning.

The Wild Robot series was incredible for kids and parents. We listened after watching the movie and it's interesting hearing our kids process the differences. I recommend listening to the source material of any TV show/ book they've watched.

Also, I know some parents will criticize for this, but we've listened/read to the hunger games books with our kids. Yes there's violence, but we think our kids handle it well. YMMV

The Lemony Snicket series of unfortunate events has a good audio book. I used that on a road trip with my kids and we all enjoyed it.

Treasure Island was a hoot for us.
