It’s still going to be beautiful and Christmasy with lights and decorations. There will still be skiing even if pared down. Your family will all be together in a beautiful area with lovely vistas. The doom and gloom seems a bit misplaced to me.

If you pay $20k for a ski trip you want good skiing. It would be very upsetting to me and it’s also dangerous because skiers of all levels are jammed on the limited open terrain. It’s always a risk in December but this is unprecedented.

My understanding of skiing is that this is just how it goes and you can’t ever spend enough to be assured good snow and reasonable crowds unless you buy a $10m mansion in one of those private things. So if you like skiiing, the thing to do is go live near skiing.

They rely on natural snow out west because it’s normally not an issue. They have some snowmaking on beginner trails so that is all that’s open right now. It’s different locally at places like Liberty, etc. where snowmaking covers the whole mountain since we barely get any snow. People go out west for bumps and trees not beginner level groomers.

This—it is annoying but there’s no point in whining about it. Come up with a Plan B.

I never cease to be amazed at the very specific advice people on this site are able to offer about a given location.

Our family would probably be so annoyed with each other with bad skiing and nothing else to do. I’d rather be at home.

Consider driving to Jackson Hole for a few days - supposedly better conditions there. A few years ago we were in Jackson for Christmas and tons of people were coming up from SLC because of the conditions. This assumes you have an ikon pass rather than Epic (note that JH requires reservations).
