If my kid really wanted it I guess I would pay.

I know one girl went there for pre-med, full pay. She enjoys it. If your kid really likes it and you can afford, then do it.

We often compare schools from all aspects. But actually when your kids go through the whole process, you will realize that there are not many options.

It depends on what your other options are and how much you saved for college. If you have the money saved, yes it is worth it (I’m an alum).

Not this again. You are not saying UVA is as good as UM, I hope.

DP here. No clue but I do know someone who attends Michigan who was denied UVA instate, but she applied RD to UVA.

+1

Sometimes kids don’t get into their flagship and they get into comparable flagships. Because California has such a wonky system, kids sometimes get rejected from UCLA & Berkeley and still get into Michigan. I assume the same happens in Virginia, especially in DC suburbs.

I have a kid there now. It’s not worth it unless you’re in one of UMichs top programs. The weaker programs not worth it. And the distribution classes in LSA are lousy.

however many on DCUM will say that it's worth it. I think it depends how much money you have saved for college.

OP. Thanks, we get it that Michigan has a lot of plusses and is a great T-20 public, but the OOS COA is steep, even compared to other T-20 privates. Eldest DC applied EA last cycle and got in. We qualify for some need aid in-state (Maryland), but Michigan not offering any aid to OOS, period. They did offer to fly in DC for 3 days of getting to know UM.

I am in-state. My kid goes to U of M. I believe that most good state flagships can support a lot of personal growth, development and learning. I went to Pitt undergrad. The way people talk about UMD CP now compared to when I lived in MoCo reminds me of how Pitt has improved in reputation but it was solid all along.

I'm a very pragmatic person. I think a Virginia person should choose to pay less and go to UVA, VT or W&M and a Maryland person should go to UMD CP vs. paying a lot more. There's always grad school to try another school.

I don't believe that the ranking strength of one sports team over another makes game day that much more fun.

I think the main justification of paying a lot OOS is potential access to top on-campus recruiting. So maybe for Ross and Engineering if aiming for name brand recruiters.

Michigan is a great school but other schools can provide the same outcomes for less, because of in-state tuition.

As far as big classes and random courses, LSA is a school for intellectually curious people and it has distribution requirements. Pitt was like that when I attended. I liked selecting the kind of classes that PP called random. There are so many undergrad classes at U of M that I find interesting that my son doesn't want me to look at the course catalogue when he is picking. Kids need to know how to use the waitlist process and to show up and ask for overrides. Big schools are not great for meek people.

Maybe OP is asking for next year? Maybe they NPC and saw they'll receive $0 so asking here if it's worth it oos with no aid? -not OP

OP. Yes, looking for second DC. Still think highly of Michigan ... if we could afford it then full pay OOS is a consideration. But the point is moot since we can't afford full pay.

NP. I don’t get it. Why did you let your kid apply then?

My kid loved Michigan, but I said no due to the cost & no merit.

Everyone is suddenly acting so helpless and delusional around college admissions! As if people are forcing you to apply!

OP. Hoping for the Tappan Scholarship. Long shot, didn't get it
