Sure, OK, your grandparents did ... but a lot of people's dear relatives absolutely did not come out of those times

Millions died from influenza, never came home from wars, contracted polio and 100 other things that most of us don't have to deal with today

PS EVERYONE's grandparents went through those things if you are here today. It's not evidence of your or their particular resilience of some special kind.

It's a bad argument in general

No every one should be watching the news. Everyone should be concerned. Turning off the news is not going to make things that are happening go away.

And the f flu going around!

But we know what happened. We don't need to see it over and over again. We don't need to look at memorials on Bondi Beach more than once, or see the Brown students sitting in silence in the library more than once. We don't need to hear whatever awful thing Trump said about Rob Reiner more than once. Once is enough.

That's a good point. Sandy Hook memorial was two days ago. But who cares? We don't have to be reminded that children died and that we should do something. It's good to just let it go. /s

The people who lost their children care…seriously? You have a cold heart.

I've been trying to take a mental break by watching old OG episodes of Fantasy Island.

LOL this show is SO bad in retrospect, no surprise at all why I loved it so much as a kid.

But man, so many guests stars are now dead.

Also, with the passing of Rob Reiner, it's making me a little sad that so many 70s memories are just gone. Also ... that generationally, I'm up next ...

But recently, my daughter received a diagnosis, and my father was hospitalized for what we thought was a cardiac problem... which turned out to be another autoimmune disease in the same cluster. Which means BOTH my parents are carriers.

I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and for my other kids to be diagnosed at some point in their lives.

Take it one day at a time, OP.

+1 We’ve had a truly extraordinary series of medical crises in our immediate family over the last few years. To deal with crisis after crisis within your family while catastrophes continue to unfold on the national and world stage is truly exhausting.

OP, I read a physical newspaper and work to limit my online exposure to national and world news right now. It helps.

I have never felt this way and my life has not been very easy.
The list of good in the world and good things going for me personally is very long.
I even appreciate that it takes me 10 steps to drop my trash bag into the chute. I don't have to worry about what happens to it. I also paid only $4.99 for 40 bags that last me almost a year.
Life is so easy compared to my great grandparents' and grandparents' lives.
The advances in medicine...

I understand, OP. I often feel the same way, but one way we can fight back against all the hatred in the world is to spread kindness as much as we can. The only way things will improve is if ordinary people reject the meanness and self-centeredness that has become so prevalent. Hold a door for someone behind you, say hello and make conversation with a cashier, take a care package to a shut- in neighbor, call that relative or friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Be the change you want to see.

.

You have no idea so you can't say that! But you felt the need to not only insert your ingorance into this discussion but also try to one up and PP and insult them. Sounds like you have some inner drama you should work on with a therapist.

You don’t know that. You weren’t there. Everyone has bad days.

Do you know much about neuroscience? It’s really fascinating how much they’ve learned about the human brain in recent decades.

Short version is that the closer connections of generations past made them far more resilient to the traumas they lived through than those of us who are inundated 24/7 with coverage and commentary on the traumas around us.

This is of course the greatest of all times to be a human, much easier than times past. But maybe an easy life doesn’t build the values we need - we seem to have broken the concepts of interdependency and decency in the process of having it all.

Frankly given the choice I’d rather have lived in my grandmothers time - she was born just before WWI and died before the explosion of social media and smartphones. She saw unbelievable human achievement and progress on social issues and missed the recent off the cliff of resurgent hatred, fascism and carelessness about others.

OP - same.

I balance paying attention enough so I'm not sticking my head in the sand with looking for some sort of enjoyment and being as kind as possible.

The hardest part for me is worrying about my child. Even though I know she's in a better place than the vast majority of children her age. So I focus on making sure she's got a courage, empathy, and critical thinking skills. And indulging her occasionally while teaching her responsibility.

Keeping friendships going is also essential to my well being.

If I didn't have a child, I'd probably just go full hermit in the woods. Or at least that's what it felt like today.

And I know I'm fine, and likely will be - it's just a really crappy time to be emphatic.

Also - my grandparents and parents who experienced more turmoil during the depression, WWII, growing up in a third world country, etc? All have significant trauma that impacted their whole lives. They just refused to admit it.

Icicles? Really? How about appreciating the outdoors in all seasons.

GS cookie season? Just set up the email list and move on. Don’t do the rest of it.

I’ve cut way back on news. Once a day, that’s it.
