FWIW Tufts was also top 20 in the LinkedIn list of best career outcomes. Similar to what a different PP described, my kid was choosing between Tufts & Brown for ED because of location & vibe. It’s a nice combo of liberal arts, science research & access to hospitals, not too small, not too intense, just a subway ride to Boston.

If your kid really wants Tufts over other options I would definitely ED2. Despite usnews rankings tufts is still highly regarded. I’m an alum and the school has an interesting brand in the workforce - guzzillions of laypeople don’t know anything about the school, they’ve never heard of it like they do Penn state or Clemson - but then you meet an exec — Like an exec In the boardroom who went to BC in the 80s and another who went to BU in the 90s - they know.

It really depends. Yes, there are kids who only or mostly care about rankings but there are also a lot of kids who really care about fit. I have a sophomore at Tufts...most of her friend either ED1 there because it was there top choice or ED2d after not getting into Brown (or, for a few, Harvard). For many, many kids, those two schools offer similar appeal. You don't find a lot of kids at Tufts who decided to go there after not getting into Penn or Columbia--the vibe is too different. And a lot don't want to be in the south or midwest so the "higher ranked" Wash U or Emory aren't appealing (and these kids know that 10-15 spots on the U.S. News ranking is meaningless when it comes to the quality of the education at Wash U vs Tufts and they'd prefer Boston over St Louis).

Agreed but some people do get into Tufts ED2 obviously. Probably just not a major bump. OP's kid will probably get in anyway in RD. Good luck OP!
