As a first year teacher, I was on the playground (first grade) with another older, and very dignified Black teacher. We saw a kid do something wrong and she said, "that child is nothing but a n*****" I guess I looked shockedand she looked at me and said "I can say that--you can't."

At a very young age, I was taught that you never say that, but it shocked me that she would. This was many years ago.

I still think the word should be dropped by all. But, it is used widely in some music, etc. It needs to go.

Never get why people get fired up over names.

I think we all should know not to say The Word. And if we have said it somehow and are corrected, even if by a middle schooler saying "bro, you can't SAY that!" we should respond with an apology and a promise to do better.

NP. The kids will not be punished. Anyone who thinks they will has not spent any time in public schools recently. That word is said and posted all day long by kids of various races, with and without the hard r. Mostly but not entirely boys.

I’m fine if the kids are disciplined, but my focus is on the adult who should know better. Give her grace? No. If she needed time off, she should have taken it. Stop trying to derail the conversation.

Not limited to this conversation - anyone who can’t handle dealing with immature middle schoolers who are totally capable of pushing all your buttons should not be working in a middle school. (And I say that as someone who has spent years working in a middle school.)

This is nuts. Saying the word, in any context, is problematic for teachers. Even if you’re just conveying another kid said it, DONT REPEAT THE WORD ITSELF. Everyone knows what you mean if you just reference it. It’s never ever ever required to say the word to report its usage. But then to get into a back and forth about how you should be allowed to say it adds fuel to the fire. Just idiot judgment but this kind of thing happens so much more frequently than you’d assume.
