Are there multiple States meets? Or just one meet where high schoolers from around the state compete?

"It depends" on the host team computer operator/coach. Sometimes it goes to MeetMobile and/or Swimcloud; sometimes only the participating teams get pdf results; and sometimes even the participating teams/swimmers don't get the results.

I would think that they would wear team suits.

Some do, some don't for districts. More for regions, everyone at states. I've never seen one at a dual meet.

The "rule" is in the VHSL handbook which can be found on vhsl.org under "Administrators and Coaches":

80-4-3 Qualifying Standards-VHSL state qualifying standards will be produced annually in

for qualifying into their respective championship meets in accordance with NFHS rules. If
a region fails to set such standards, the default for those championships will be the VHSL
state qualifying standards.

Yes there is a NHFS rule book that VHSL uses, but it only covers State Meets (think NHFS=USA Swimming, VHSL=PVS). VHSL itself is only responsible for Class 1-6 State Meets, so it doesn't cover anything except the State Championship meets. VHSL will also publish a "Meet Information" on their website for the State Meets (similar to a PVS Sanction/Meet announcement) that will spell out the different ways to qualify for States. Everything below that is decided by the HS Athletic Directors in that Region/District; so it's WILDLY different between Regions and Districts around the state. It gets even more convoluted when there are mixed Class schools in the same Region and/or District.

So the crappy answer is really "Ask your HS Athletic Director" because they are probably the only person that knows for your particular school.

That is only the Northern Region. Each region is slightly different (but all Class 6 very similar)

Okay, I have two questions now. Where are the regional cut times posted (thank you to the State cut times poster)?

And, if a kid already has a state cut time, I would assume that the coach would try and get other kids into District/Regionals in that event? Am I correct in that assumption?

The Region times aren't posted publicly, they are sent out by the DSA of the school hosting the specific region. Most coaches should have them, ours sent them out in an email at the beginning of the year.

Sometimes, but not necessarily. If your schools is a competitive team and in a position to win the District/Region meet, then they might swim the swimmer who already has a time in that event to maximize points.

PVS posts all the District results, and time standards (including region cut) are included. They are under HS meets.

Some of the information here is wrong, but it’s because it’s confusing and it’s slightly different depending on which VHSL class and region you are in.

For States, it’s really easy. The cut times are posted on the VHSL website. If you swim faster than that time at a HS meet this year, you have a spot at States.

Next up is Regionals. If you finish in the top 5 at your regional meet, then you have earned a spot at States.

Now is where it gets confusing. To make regionals it’s either make the region cut time which are different in every region or each school gets to send X number of swimmers where X is different in every region. This usually happens in regions that don’t have districts. If there are districts then each school gets X entries per event, where again X is different. If you swim at districts, the top X finishers get a sport at regionals. All of these decisions are made by the HS Atheltic Directors in the region, so it’s very very different depending on what class/region/district you are in. A lot of this is based on geography and how close all the HS are to each other.
