Well, this has not been our experience. The girls who want to hang out IN PERSON alone are going for a boyfriend. Otherwise obviously boys see girls at school, clubs or other activities and talk to each other in passing, however, they're certainly not friends in the sense he is with his buddies and hang out after school.

The spinning of this that this is because all the girls are boy-crazed looking for boyfriends and not simply a reflection on your own son's social skills is chef's kiss.

Also, I didn't hang out with guys outside of school in HS as friends, but certainly did that in college and afterwards. In fact as an adult, I have several good long-term male friends, with whom I have never been coupled up.

If he is happy enough with the situation and not being ostracized at school, I think it's fine.

I think the people responding to this have the type of sons who hang out in the basement playing video games.

My 17 year old son is friends with girls and always has been although I would say in middle school the friendships were more limited and he was more friendly with them at school and his outside of school time was more boys.
