Interesting. Is this cultural/religious?

In our Hindu family - no alcohol or non-vegetarian food is served after any religious ceremony. But the reception turns into a food fest with open bar.

You need alcohol to enjoy yourself?

Cheese wiz and crackers for cocktail hour

Worst wedding I ever went to we left five minutes into dinner

DH wasn’t staying at a racist party

It was his HS friends wedding the brides side

+1. An open bar is expensive. I'd rather people be able to get married and celebrate than have them worrying about the cost of an open bar if they can't afford it.

It’s also common to have receptions in fire halls with a sandwich bar. So there’s that. We all loved them and they were the norm.

+1. I've been to a wedding in middle of nowhere, PA with a few kegs and sandwich bar in a firehall. Everyone had a great time.

That sounds amazing. What is a sandwich bar? Like with ingredients to make your own sandwich?

We were completely caught off guard by it and my husband had to leave the venue to find an ATM to get money.

It was VERY tacky in my opinion.

Omg you could not have alcohol for one night ???

Poor you

You are tacky complaining

My cousin's wedding was cash bar and it was kind of tacky. It did not say anything about it on the invitation. I think they decided to have a large reception with cheaper food and no alcohol over a smaller nicer reception.

We went to one dry wedding that was more of a brunch reception that was very nice with fancy mocktails. It was dry for religious reasons for one of the families. There was an evening "after party" for the younger guests that was open bar.

I agree. I've attended dry weddings before and it was fine. Go out ahead of time and have a few drinks if you must. But if you can't go a few hours without alcohol, that's another issue.

One, and it wasn't the only tacky thing about it (the tackiest being a dance with the bride where you were required to pin cash onto her dress . . . suggested minimum $20). They did give each table a bottle of sparkling wine for the toast, but some other guest took ours when we all got up when called to the buffet line.

I think if you have a cash bar, don’t expect too much dancing.

It's open bar unless dc urban moms are attending and the bartender is serving chardonnay. Bankruptcy is no way to start a marriage.
