From my understanding (given the pandemic going on at our school of vaxxed kids), this year's shot was a poor match for Flu A.

Not the flu but my baby just remained covid positive for 19 days, and only started on the last day my toddler, spouse and I were positive...assume flu can linger and have long incubation period too

Returning to school threshold isn’t zero contagiousness though. That’s also the guidance for Covid and since many kids don’t even have a fever or feel very sick with Covid, they can attend school the whole time, per those guidelines.

It’s supposed to include “and improving symptoms”, which would mean the virus is on its way out, but you can feel that you’re improving , and have had no fever for 24 hours, after just 48hr or so of flu or covid and everyone knows you’re still contagious at that point. You’re less contagious, sure, but not 100% free and clear.

I believe official timeline for flu for most healthy adults is you’re contagious for about 5-7 days. Young kids or immmnicomprommzkdd people, longer. If you’re coughing a lot, even if you’re just a little contagious , you’re spreading virus every time you cough.

My Dr said fever free for 24hours without meds, and symptoms improving. If you want to be more cautious, checking if the person tests negative on a rapid test is useful. Masking and air filtration/exchange can reduce the chances of infection. I would see someone ten days out from flu. , but if I had a serious medical reason to avoid any illness I probably would not go to a family celebration without masking and testing because the person with the flu could be the least of your worries.

I don’t understand it but I’ve cared for an immediate flu-ridden family member for days 3 times without getting the flu. (And I mean super close proximity - sharing beds, food, kisses).

Of course now that I say that this winter will probably be the one my luck runs out.
