Returning to school threshold isn’t zero contagiousness though. That’s also the guidance for Covid and since many kids don’t even have a fever or feel very sick with Covid, they can attend school the whole time, per those guidelines.
It’s supposed to include “and improving symptoms”, which would mean the virus is on its way out, but you can feel that you’re improving , and have had no fever for 24 hours, after just 48hr or so of flu or covid and everyone knows you’re still contagious at that point. You’re less contagious, sure, but not 100% free and clear.
I believe official timeline for flu for most healthy adults is you’re contagious for about 5-7 days. Young kids or immmnicomprommzkdd people, longer. If you’re coughing a lot, even if you’re just a little contagious , you’re spreading virus every time you cough.
