I took my kids out for 3 days for a family trip. They are the same ages as yours. My 5th grader was unbothered. But my middle schooler was hit harder than I expected. Because it was unexcused the teachers did not have to give her time to make up assignments. Anything she turned in when she returned was marked late. There were some assignments she was never given and marked late when she didn't turn them in because she didn't know. It was stressful. I didn't realize that unexcused was treated differently. I would look at what part of quarter you are going. If it is at the end and they miss a bunch of stuff that will be on the report card I would probably not make my 8th grader go. If it is the beginning of the quarter it would be easier to make the work, but the gradebook will look like all Fs for a minute while he does the missing work.
We will avoid taking the kids out again. We learned out lesson, but it was an amazing trip and I am glad I didn't know how hard it would be to catch back up!

The OP said her son is struggling with Geometry as it is.

OP, it sunds like your son could benefit from working with a tutor to help with Geometry, regardless of taking the trip or not.

Take the trip. They won’t remember the missed school but they will remember the trip. Have them work with the teachers so they have work and won’t come back super behind.

Not about a guaranteed spot at high school. More about how much he’s missing when already struggling with geometry. And then jet lag etc on top… just wondering if anyone has actually taken this much time to cross the world, not just from sickness (those are excused absences.)

Will they already have a guaranteed spot at a high school at that point? If yes, I’d have no problem missing 5 days of school for a special family event.

Algebra counts as well, but yes.

Sounds like your kids doesn’t want to go, that is what worth considering, also international travel is exhausting.
And pardon me, sometimes we make effort and sacrifice (time, money, energy) but our existence in that moment of really joyful wedding is not really that matter…

If your child doesn't want to miss it, I wouldn't do it. He knows how studies best. My kid never minded missing class because he preferred to learn everything on his own anyway, using the notes posted by teachers. But if he had said what your child is telling you, I wouldn't pull him from school.

My high school kid toke a 6 days sick leave last month. He took the math test during the advisory period after he back to school. Also he can find all the update homework assignment post by the teachers in Schoology. I really don’t think it will affect them much if they are a responsible students and follow up all the missing assignments after they back to school.

We choose a wedding date that would make it easier for my niece and nephews to attend our wedding because it was important to us that they be there. Some people do take school schedules while planning. Not everyone does but some do.
