Sorry for not reporting back sooner, I know it bugs me when I offer help/advice and the OP doesn’t come back. Christmas rather got in the way!

The lab work on her bloods came back and didn’t show anything of concern. The doctor managed to eek a bit more out of her than we’d managed to though, and she admitted that it’s happened a couple more times than we were aware of but she’d hidden it as she was embarrassed, quite understandable but I’ve talked to her about how important it is we know what’s going on so we can help, and the doctor reinforced this.

They’re doing a few more tests to see whether it could be a nerve or bladder muscle issue, but seem fairly confident it’s more likely to be just a side effect of the growth spurt she’s had recently and that things will catch up naturally pretty quickly and even out.

No more incidents since the one that prompted me to post asking for advice, and when we stayed with my parents for a couple of nights over Christmas I did manage to convince her to wear a Goodnite just in case. She was still very reluctant as her cousins were also staying, but she went to great lengths to hide it with long pjamas and a nightshirt over the top, and seemed to grasp that the risk of an accident would be far more embarrassing than taking precautions. Unnecessary as it happens, but proud she made the mature decision and hopefully now she knows the world didn’t end she may do the same again in similar situations. I won’t force it, and she knows where they are but hasn’t chosen to at home which is absolutely fine.

Tell her there are lots of kid and even young adults who need them sometimes. I had them during postpartum recovery.

Thanks everyone.

We did manage to get an appointment with the doctor and she had a full check over, with nothing obvious that could be causing these issues. They’ve ordered some blood work, so waiting for the results to come back and we can go from there. The dr didn’t seem overly concerned, given her age there’s lots of growing going on and of course hormonal changes so it may hopefully just be something that works itself out in time, if they don’t find a medical cause that can be treated.

She’s been fine since the last incident, and given the pattern (or lack thereof) previously it could well be weeks before it happens again, if it ever does. She’s doing great at putting it out of her mind, and I think her friend not mentioning what happened has helped - she was worried about being teased.

Yep I did pick up a pack of Goodnites and mentioned to her that I have them if she decides she ever wants to wear one for peace of mind if she’s going to be around others and worried about the risk of an accident. She’s still adamant she won’t, and that’s absolutely her choice to make, but they’re tucked away in my closet in case they’re ever needed.

How’s she doing now? Did you talk with her doctor about her having accidents? Did you get her nighttime underwear?

Might be worth also asking the doctor to check glucose levels.

good idea

I would still have the pull-ups available for special occasions like if you are traveling or anywhere that her having an accident would be a serious issue. I understand that she might not love the idea but tell her it is really for just-in-case and she isn’t going to be in any trouble. It will be less traumatic for her to just wear a pull-up for those times instead of risking an accident.

I wouldn’t put a 9yr old on pull ups every night that wets the bed once per month- at most. That is dramatic and uncomfortable. I’d start waking her up to use the bathroom about an hour before she’d typically wake up on her own.

It's too bad "trust" and "fault" are even thoughts.
It's also too bad DD thinks wearing pullups are worse than peeing a puddle in her pjs on someone's floor, carpet, or bed.

Hmmm, could she be having sleep seizures?

We’ve got an appointment later this week, so will see if any medical cause is in play. It’s so random and sporadic that I guess I’d convinced myself it couldn’t be, but I’m clearly no expert.

I did throw the idea of wearing a pull up, when if just when sleeping away from home, and with over the top reassurance that it’s absolutely not because we don’t trust her (this isn’t her fault!) or because we think she will actually wet the bed but just to prevent the risk of embarrassment if another accident happens around friends, but she was horrified by the suggestion so I’m not going to push it. The option is always there if she wants to try it, but hopefully we can clear this up quickly.

I’ll report back if they can tell us anything helpful.
