They also ruined the ending with the commercials, they kept running that commercial in heavy rotation showing the family reacting to her dancing on TV, that was the climactic point of the movie. Still a good moment, but kind of like showing the spaceship blowing up at the end of Star Wars.

We liked the movie but it would be nice to get a version edited for television. We prefer our Christmas movies to be a lot more family friendly. They just need to dub over the heavy profanity, particularly the potty mouth Grandmas, the dope smoking, we could have done without the dirty Christmas sweaters, and DJ girlfriend too.

At 67, she has the best surgeon money can buy. Tastefully done.

I laughed a total of zero times. I'm so sad for MP that she felt she had to do this.

Maybe they each joined because the other was on board. The cast as a whole is quite accomplished, but they were wasted in this drivel. Lazy writing, phoning it in.

PP again - the only good thing about this movie was Michelle Pfeiffer's very believable Texas accent. She didn't overdo it and kept it very subtle. And of course, she's still gorgeous. Those are my only two positive comments about this complete waste of time.

Jennifer Garner would’ve been so much better. I like Michelle Pfeiffer but I think she’s too sophisticated and classy for this role. They needed someone goofy and dorky.

The kids’ personalities were the worst. Especially the oldest. She’s a mother, she knows how hard it is I assume, how could she not offer her mom any help?! She did zero parenting herself, and she did nothing to make Christmas more joyful or magical for her kids.

I'm by no means defending this craptastic movie (I'm the PP who said she was so disappointed b/c I love Michelle Pfieffer) but I think the point wasn't the award, it was that if her kids actually nominated her, then it would show her that they actually see her instead of completing ignoring her and taking her for granted.

Ok I made it through this movie.

I really really dislike martyr moms and the families that take them for granted. I know people like this and it’s so exhausting to be around.

The family opened presents even when the mom was missing! Wow. The parents should have communicated to the kids that Christmas has to wait until grandma is back. It’s not all the family’s fault, because like I said, martyr moms. That’s partly intentional incompetence by the family and also years of the mom liking being the one who does all this for their family. And to top it off, the movie wasn’t even funny or warm hearted. No one was likeable. Two big thumbs down.

This could have been a silly good time had Jennifer Garner made it when she was 35/40 and had 2 or 3 tweens/teens, had a fun dolt of a husband, lived on the East Coast, etc.

The plot should have centered on her scrambling to decorate the house, do all the shopping, run the school/church Christmas bazaar, get all dolled up for her husband’s office party, etc. and then after all the hilarity happening in stressful situations, her extended family leaves her behind as they head to the nutcracker or rockettes or even mass. And she leaves.

No need for the stupid tv show contest.

She could have hit the road and encountered other moms who lost their $hit along with some tug on the heartstrings women. Perhaps she runs into her own Cousin Eddie character who brings more humor and they concoct some sort of plot to take back their sanity and teach their families the true meaning of Christmas.

Anything would have been better than this stupid plot and awful characters.

I just tried to watch this. Wow, it really is bad. I can’t take Michelle Pfeiffer’s accent and the premise is ridiculous. I think her personality is supposed to be humorous but she comes off as unlikable as one of those Texas murdering moms and as shallow as a puddle. The rest of the characters are equally odd and not funny. I couldn’t stand more than 20 minutes.

The funny thing I've noticed over lots of years online is that the better a film is, the harder the trolls get in ahead of time to tell people not to watch it.

Not saying this is the case, but on another message board years ago there was an account that declared that they were an academy member who had received a pre-screener and said it was "unwatchable" and recommended that no one go to see it in theaters.

someone else said, "if you're an actual member of the academy you just violated the rules by posting online about a film unreleased to the public and you could be expelled" and that account immediately went CRICKETS

I think the movie did win the Oscar for best film that year

Go watch the movie and report back.

It really is terrible…which is shocking given how we tend to give most holiday movies a free pass, and this one looked like fun in the trailer/promo.

I wanted to love it. I watched it the day it was released. It’s awful.

But I still want people to watch it and comment. I feel like the concept could have been tweaked and different choices would have made the movie much better. I’m curious on what others think.

PS - I caught the tail end of a radio segment on terrible holiday movies the other morning during my commute, and I believe this film (and perhaps even this thread) prompted the segment.
