If you can, try to be near the staging area for the string bands - their performances are amazing! Incredible theming, music, costumes - the best part of the parade by far, in my opinion.

Thanks all. Op here. We’re going! Training up on New Year’s Eve. Will go early on the 1st. Find something else to entertain ourselves for the afternoon. Then on the 2nd, we’ll go to Calder and Barnes (we have reservations). Will report back!

I enjoyed it and am not the same race as most of the people participating. I went early and the person I was dating has family who has been in the parade for generations. It was fine, just don't stand near the wasted and belligerent people.

I'd probably watch on TV this year and see if your 10yo expresses interest and, if so, go next year. I went once with friends in my 20s when I knew a Mummer. My mom wouldn't even let us watch it on TV (bunch of drunks, etc.)

It would be a fun day to do the mummers and then the historical stuff downtown or the Franklin Institute, if you haven't done that before.

Franklin Institute is closed on New Year's Day. Independence Hall is closed until the end of January. Not sure about other historic sites but likely closed as well.
