I personally wouldn't forgo the trip for just this reason. I also wouldn't view it as categorically supporting the country by visiting there. You may be helping locals with $$ from their business and you could try and seek out a local place to support. I don't think it is black and white that your going to the country supports the regime and would overcome this if I otherwise wanted to go on the trip.

I skipped a group trip to Thailand years ago when they were drowning Rohingya refugees. I felt a little jealous looking at everyone’s pictures (there will be so many pictures) but I didn’t regret it. I’m a little less self-righteous now, so I’d probably go to Thailand if the opportunity came up. Can’t be on a high horse as an American, sadly.

If I don’t want to go , I wont. If I dont think I will feel safe and my stress level would be up all the time , not worth it.
Its an International trip, not to a restaurant in the next city.
Decline if you dont want to go… give any reason.

That's what I was thinking. If you follow the law, you will not run into any problems at all. But if you don't want to support such countries, then by all means, decline the invite and explain your reason to your friend. I wouldn't go either. But the Saudi Arabia, the UAE and their neighbors seem to make it a point to not progress in terms of women's rights, and they're OK with modern slavery. Not cool.

I would skip the South East Asian countries that are platforms for human trafficking as well, like Thailand.


I lived in Dubai for years. People, both men and women, loved Dubai. Emiratis are pretty progressive in their own way, many Emirati women work and have careers of their own. We don't know where OP's trip is or whether she's even real, but the hypocrisy and blind ignorance of this thread is off the charts.

Do you like your friend? Do you like the group of women? Can you afford the trip? That's how I would decide.

There are threads on this site all the time about how people feel bad they have no friends or why is it so hard to find friends. Show up for people, say yes way more than you say no, say yes sometimes when you have some reservations and at least in my experience, every time I'm glad I did it.

That does not mean you have to say yes to this, of course.
