Who are his friends ? Does he have any of the “incel” red flags?

DC has ADHD so making the ‘leap’ from MS (great grades, minimal work) to HS (minimal work = crappy grades) was hard.

DC had an executive functioning coach, who helped.

Have you ever sat with your child one day and seen what their workload is and what's coming up in the semester?

Ask them what they will do for each assignment. Freshman year there should be some long term assignments that need planning. What you find out about what they think they should do may be eye opening.

My kid thought he just had to listen to the material in his math class to do well. I had to explain to him that just because he understands a concept does mean he's prepared for the test. He has to do practice problems. Well maybe not in Algebra (for him anyway, but PreCalc would be harder)

Also, if they are behind on math, get on that stat. It builds.

This is the problem. Happened to my son too. He may have no idea what effort is and lack study skills.

Once he starts applying himself (if he chooses to, teens can be hard to lead) he may still fall short and need some tutoring. Tough to tell at this point if there are holes in his learning.
