I was fairly tough back then. It would have been fine within a week, but dealing with nursing, diapering, bleeding would have been a challenge. Why was she traveling when she was heavily pregnant, or was this a premature birth?

C-section was a very important detail, poster - mother should speak with doctor about that if relevant

Given OPs extra info, I’d want to get home asap - maybe one week after birth assuming no complications.

As soon as the doctor said it was safe for me and baby. I assume if baby is healthy that’s less than two weeks postpartum.

It's more of a problem for the mom than baby at that age.i would check in with pediatrician. I bet in this case , it will not be that long with precautions...like I would change diaper in the car and not at a rest stop.

6 months.

I have three kids and I learned the hard way that I do not travel well with tiny babies. For baby #3, before I was even pregnant I decided I was sleeping in my bed in my house every single night for the first six months. Get through the newborn stage, sleep train, settle in and catch up on MY sleep, then travel.

That’s what I did and it was so much better.

It’s so personal and hard to predict though. I know lots of people who had a great time traveling internationally toward the end of their parental leave (when babies were 10 weeks to 4 months), even ambitiously, and had a great time.

My big advice - don’t commit to anything. Make sure tickets are refundable. And be very clear with anyone you’re going to visit that you are hoping to come but cannot commit. And be open to cancelling in your own mind.

A contributor to my PPD lasting so long with my second baby was continuing to plod through on planned travel between 3 and 6 months postpartum. I never really considered canceling because I “could” do it - but it was NOT good for me. Or baby (because baby needs a sane mama). Be open to reevaluating your plans.

Anytime is fine. I’m sure mom wants to get home ASAP. I know I would.

I did it at 3 weeks.

I am 9:41 we returned home day 13 or 14 I can’t remember. We just did what we had to do. Baby fine normal active smart 10 year old.

I did this at 3 weeks and it wasn't really a problem physically but I was pissed off and miserable the entire time.

We did an normal 8 hour drive in 10 hours stopping every 2 hours at pediatrician advice. My father died 12 days after my son was born. We drove in day 11. Again pediatrician approved the trip. I pumped in car next to the baby and we stopped to feed and snuggle every 2 hours, change diaper. Ate in car.
