OP, this is a women's approach, and not usually done by guys: They were in each other's lives. They meant something to each other. They want each other to be happy (deep down they do, since they are decent human beings), it is ordinary to wonder what became of the person, where they are now. It's a gentle way to communicate, "I've made a life choice." Sometimes people consider reuniting w/lovers from their past even if it's only whimsy. This closes the book.
