Things will only get worse for many schools as the number of kids applying to college will be decreasing until 2041 because of low birth rates...

State flag ships enrollment has blown up in the last few years, so the share of students attending privates is going down.

Deathpool has some interesting data in it but they have a flawed methodology which means you need to take their rankings with a grain of salt. Many of their scores aren't reflective of reality. Xavier, the subject of this thread actually has a 'strong' ranking in Deathpool.

Which is exactly why it is struggling to stay afloat. These are desperate times for SLACs. “generous merit” could mean no merit in two years’ time if the school closes. My LAC is playing the same games to fill a class

Xavier isn't a SLAC, it's a mid-sized Jesuit school.

Small colleges in particular, not just LACs. Just look into the issues that many public systems are having as students gravitate to the flagship or larger campuses at the expense of regional schools. It is a problem across the Midwest and mid-Atlantic states. It will become a bigger problem down the road as many of these schools both public and private are the economic anchors for their communities.

Don’t be a sheep

OK, then some of these schools simply cost too much for the career outcomes. It's not being a sheep to expect an $80K school to deliver more value than a $40K school.

You sound like a striver.
