The Mennonites offer some plans that are more affordable than those under the Affordable Health Care site. They have a government exemption to sell plans. Religious entities are legally allowed to sell health care plans for individual and families.

Google Mennonite Health Care plans. My therapist told me about them as he has his individual insurance through them and when my Obamacare became $1300 per month for the cheapest plan and it had a $7000 deductible I needed another option.

Prior to the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act under President Obama there was a lot of plans that you could shop for the best price for individuals and families. They are no longer allowed to be sold under the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act.

The direction is to have everyone who does not have workplace insurance get coverage through the government Affordable Health Care site.

Hahahahaha

DP, there is nothing funny about this because this is true. The affordable care act made healthcare unaffordable and created a ponzi scheme for the healthy to pay for the unhealthy.
and if you had pre existing conditions you could not get insurance at all.

Not true there was a waiting period which make sense to avoid scammers but now that's built in to the price and everyone has to pay

We pay $3k a month for COBRA for three of us.

No, the ACA eliminated "pre existing conditions" and $1M lifetime caps. It made it cheaper for most people and allowed many to get insurance that otherwise couldn't (have cancer can't get insured, use your $1M cap and you don't have insurance any longer ever).

It also allowed children to be covered under their parent's plan until 26 and developmentally disabled to be covered past that.
once they turn 26, they are eligible for COBRA for up to three years if apt hey take it right away.

That is normal. Do COBRA and see if your DH gets a job in the meantime and if not go on the ACA when COBRA runs out. That is what we are doing. I don’t think most people realize how much of a benefit it is to have subsidized healthcare from their employer.

+1

The real solution is not to "get rid of ACA" but rather to provide UHC for everyone. Cut out the middleman (insurance companies) who are the ones driving up costs without adding any real value.
Then costs would be much lower for everyone.

The D wanted that back in 2010+, but had to settle for what they could manage to get thru congress thanks to the R who wanted nothing. But UHC would save millions...and put many insurance companies out of business. but we should head that direction. Healthcare should not be a for profit industry.

get UHC, then allow those who want to pay extra for additional coverage if they desire.

But even now, Medicare is ridiculous. If you have $$, despite having paid 1.7% of all earnings, we will still have to pay $600-800/person/month for Part B, another $200-250 for Part D (medications), and then Part G (I think is what it's now called) for $200-250/month/person. So $1.2K per person for healthcare, in retirement (yes we can afford it) But we have paid over $250K+ into medicare over the years (likely a lot more). all to pay more for healthcare in our aging years than we ever paid thru an employer.

What plan is that though? Do you just mean the cheapest ACA plan?

There are some ACA non-compliant plans out there. They’re less expensive but of course don’t cover as much.
