It depends on the food. Regular food vs. kibble is healthier.

We don’t let our dog lick plates. We try to avoid feeding human food since it’s not good for dog’s health.

Agree
Currently have 3 dogs in the house, I don't let them lick out plates nor eat out of any dishes.
They have their bowls, and scraps go there if I ever decide to give leftovers to dogs

Is this normal?
The cat eats on the kitchen table but she wiped it down before we sat down.
The kitchen chairs are destroyed by the cat scratching them.

Just… why?

Look up toxoplasmosis and you will understand.

Huh ?

Toxoplasmosis has no relation whatsoever to the thread topic. Plus, even if contracted it does little to no harm to humans unless another severe condition is present in the human.

One of my dogs gets sick to the point of vomiting over the most minor stressors, and is on a strict, chicken-free, "dog food and approved treats only" diet. The other one could eat straight trash for weeks and be fine, if a bit gassier than usual. For most dogs, licking the teaspoon of leftover flavors off a plate isn't a big deal, nor is the occasional treat of leftover people food. If you have a dog who can't handle it, you'll know.

This is so true. If you have a vacuum cleaner dog you know. We don't have a vacuum cleaner dog, but he does love watching the roomba do his job so there's that!

Pets eating off of human plates AFTER the meal, and BEFORE a heavy duty cycle in the dishwasher is acceptable, I think. Even though I don't let my dog do this, because I don't want him to develop an association with human food/plates and his meals.

But you remind me of a friend of mine who has a very desultory attitude about his cats sampling the freshly prepared dishes he makes. I saw his cats saunter onto the counter and LICK THE FOOD PREPARED ON A DISH. He shooed it away casually. I made sure to serve myself from the other side of the dish.

We don’t. I don’t think it’s a filthy practice at all; it goes into the dishwasher. but per our vet’s advice, we feed them dig food and treats, not human food.

I have separate plates for my dog and give her human food or part of our meal but only rarely do I let her eat off our plates. They all go through the dishwasher.

Please explain how it is filthy if the dishes are fully washed afterward before they are once again used?

Aside from you being precious, why not? Assuming she actually washes the dishes in a way that would sanitize them from all the mouth germs they regularly see, what's the problem with dogs licking them clean? You're being awfully delicate about a non-issue, OP.

You don't have to have pets, but other people do. If you can't avoid being a judgy ass about it, have fewer friends.
