as a person from central Illinois originally

- knox is a great college with an impressive history
- it's very very small
- it's financially fragile
- galesburg is a very small town.

it usually attracted one kid every few years from our HS who went because of the FA package, smart kids who had no money available for college. I think in these days, those same kids would go to better colleges with robust FA.

IOW, I'm a fan but I'd pass

Not sure if this is a serious question but the school was founded by abolitionists and one of the first colleges to enroll students of any race and gender. The college was a major hub for the Underground Railroad. It is also the site of one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. So I guess you can say it’s the original woke college?

This is so reassuring to hear. And glad your DC found the right fit. That is what we are trying to encourage our DC to focus on!

I’ll share my DC’s experience (so far) going to a small liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere as an athlete. My kid is at St Mary’s College of Maryland. Without sports they may have ended up somewhere else, but it was a great fit - DC thought they’d love a big bustling state school or something, but knew they’d do best academically at a small school where there wasn’t pressure to declare a major early. Several years ago, I knew a female student who received a full scholarship to Knox College. Attended for one year, then transferred due to boredom/small size/location.

Galesburg is where many Amtrak workers live.


I will add that the student was not a member of any athletic team while at Knox College. That may make a difference.


This is definitely DC’s concern, even with being part of a team.
