Ice and pain meds (just ibuprofen) for the first day or so. Soft foods fir the first couple of days ..Whatever they like . We did not get any instructions about sleeping with head elevated.
My DS also. Very little pain and was ready to go the next day. Soft food for a couple of days so it didn’t get stuck in the sockets.
I had a similar experience and I was in my 50s.
Maybe it’s the doctor. I always recommend mine.

I needed the opioid. Tylenol would NOT have cut it.

Insurance didn't cover it, but worth it. Our son had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed and recovery was easy. He only needed Tylenol for 3 days-no major pain meds. We made sure he was diligent with cleaning the area shooting salt water with a syringe if I recall correctly and he iced the first day. We kept him on mushy foods a day extra just to be safe.

Yes to staying on top of/ahead of the pain meds for at least the first 3 days;
Yes to the over the head ice pack that keeps the ice packs on the right spots along the jaw.
Every kid is different. One of ours was miserable for 8-ish days, the other was fine by day 3.
Our kids preferred scrambled eggs as far as soft foods (and I was trying to get some protein in them)
