+1 It's probably his go-to compliment for any kid.

Mine for babies is "She looks so alert!"
because parents love it that their babies are bundles of learning neurons.
If someone took that wrong then I don't know what I'd do.

Sorry for inserting autism into the conversation, but my husband and son are on the spectrum. I've had to talk to both several times to make sure they understand the import of certain remarks. Some people just don't have great socio-emotional sensitivity and need explicit instruction in certain explosive areas of language.


+1 I agree, but modern times have gotten absurd. Reporting that comment to HR? Ridiculous.


Better to be safe than sorry. Report everything.

+3 I interpreted this as a reference to the child's inner light, which is an important concept in the Quaker religion, and is understood to be divine and good. How sad that somebody would interpret this statement as racist.

It’s truly ridiculous and also contributes to the decline in basic social skills. People are so afraid to say anything to anyone anymore.

People should be afraid to say racist insults that make others miserable, even those that they didnt think were "that bad". That said, the comment about light in this case was not referring to race. Some kids have a lot of light, no matter skin color.
