Come on, you are all taking this way too seriously. They pick who they pick to round out the DEI, geographic diversity, etc. These are not all top notch kids, it's actually silly to obsess over HPY, after TO, those days are over, they showed their true colors.

But they are test required again now

Yes, I believe they have rejected up to 70% over the past couple of years. Hoping my DC is deferred as well. I have heard the explanation given by AOs for why these schools have to be restrictive and it's because without it being restrictive, each school would get way too many applications and would not be able to make a decisio by mid-December.

Anonymous wrote:That's helpful but kind of sad as well. Figured DC would at least get deferred. Maybe applying REA is not a good idea given that only really interested and strong candidates will apply REA.

Curious why you thought that. Mine did ed/rea to a different ivy and figure that statistically, chances are slim for most applicants.

Seems silly as well to make the process restrictive given the low rates of admits and the fact that most of the kids will be rejected after this first round.

Not any more. They have culled a bunch and admitted others and then they need to find ways to differentiate between the rest. The rest - at least qualified on paper or otherwise intriguing - are who get the interviews. Most of those will be rejected - they used to defer a lot, but with the number of applicants, they don’t defer very many because they don’t have the resources to run them all through again.

Not all REA applicants get interviews, there is some culling process though I believe some super strong applicants get admitted without one.

AOs say that 60-80% of applicants are qualified.

I simply don't believe that -- all the top schools say it to an extent, but it feels like a throwaway line.

If the Yale admissions officers are to be believed, they strongly implied that 20,000 applications out of 57,000 applications were not competitive at the very first glance. These were wholly deficient in GPA, rigor, English language proficiency, scores, etc. I would venture to say that on a second, longer culling, you can easily remove half of the ones remaining.

Hooked?

Even if. A plain ol legacy with a 3.2 is not getting into Yale. These are not kids who ever get in.

George W Bush?

He was not plain ol legacy. He was rich and from a famous family and that was back when Yale took lots of people from NE boarding schools.

I would suspect that 20,000 get immediately rejected.

Typical suburban high school, MC or UMC, probably an SAT below 1400.

I dont think the culling even looks at high school. I think we'd be surprised by the 1100 SAT scores coming in from Vietnam or the bottom half of the class in America. Just not a hard call for a junior AO or AI
