My 2024 high school grad was interviewed and then deferred during the SCEA process. Was accepted in RD. There now and loving it! Good luck to your student.

This is absolutely not true. It’s a very good sign, OP.

I wouldn’t say it this way. Kids who are 100% getting in, don’t get one. Many who get interviewed won’t get in…it’s a sign the kid is on the cusp. So it’s a great sign the kid is not in the automatic no pile. That’s fair to say. It’s also not as good as being 100% yes.

+1 Interview means you've passed the first cut and the admissions office would like more information. They don't always need more information.

I’m a Yale interviewer and I get more in than I used to than when they tried to give everyone an interview, but the odds still are not in your favor. Most do not. Five percent is five percent.

This. My kid was the only one offered an interview at his high school and didn’t get in despite everyone reading into it. Odds are still against you.

Students who do not receive an interview invitation will not be disadvantaged, but applicants are encouraged to connect with a Yale alumni interviewer or student interviewer if invited."

Limited interview capability is so interesting because I was turned away when I offered to interview years ago. They had enough so they didn't need me. That was a while ago and I'm in a major metro area so I guess things have changed. Maybe I'll volunteer again and see what they say.

If given an interview this early, what’s the likelihood of admission? Small undersubscribed interdisciplinary major.

early or later doesn't matter.

Yale doesn't interview the auto-admits. They dont need more information on them. The academic superstars, the athletes they really need. They will sometimes interview the super donor just to make sure the kid isn't nuts. They also don't interview the people who are not viable candidates. So out of every 100 candidate in the SCEA pool, they're not interviewing the top 5 or bottom 30. But... your kid probably had a good feeling they were not the top 5 or bottom 30. So things haven't really changed. Dont throw up any red flags during the interview is the main thing.

During the RD round, things are a little different because the pool is a little more all over the place. Now they're not interviewing the top 2 or bottom 50. So a good sign, but again probably not news.

They can also run out of time/interviewers during RD. That's not your kids problem and won't hurt their app.
