Sidelight hater PP here - I'm considering custom wooden shutters on the sidelights only (don't like them on main windows, makes it look like we're living in film noir). This is what my parents did and it's not very intrusive, you can adjust to let in light as you please or open all the way. Lots of our neighbors do the privacy contact paper and I'm also not a fan.

Seems very practical, I don't see why someone would hate it. Who hates curtains on windows? That's all it is imo.

I guess I don’t have strong feelings but tend away from it. In my old house we had side lights like that by the front door and I bought sidelight curtains with small tension rods to cover the side lights — in part because it was western exposure and the afternoon sun was brutal and in part because the foyer opened to our family room so anyone standing at the door could look inside and see me and my kids in the family room which I did not like. So I’m a big fan of side light curtains but the entire curtain across the doorway looks to me like you were too cheap to buy sidelight curtains and instead just bought something at target to solve the problem.

I would get rid of the glass front door and put sheers on the transoms/sides. Much simpler.

I hate our sidelights but if I put that up in our builder grade home without additional decor/context it wouldn't look right. It's like a full commit.

It reminds me of the entrance to restaurants in northern cities in the winter. Functional, but not in any way attractive or preferable as a "look". And the ones that drag on the floor seem especially ill-considered - the entryway gets wet and muddy depending on the weather!

Can you just get a different door that gives you privacy without putting up a Wizard of Oz curtain that's going to irritate your husband (and be one more thing to clean)?

I like how it looks in the first and the 3rd photo so I guess it really depends on the overall style - I do not like how it looks in the other photos.

I would not do this unless there was an actual need for it beyond decor.

When decorating, please don't forget what the original use was.

We had heavy curtains behind our front door growing up, because we were in a house in northern Europe that lacked a double entrance (a must over there), and the cold air would seep in. The heavy curtain served to insulate the rest of the house from the cold.

If your house is recent and well-insulated, you don't need a curtain there. It then becomes purely decorative, so if you insist, you'd better tie it with other decor elements in your entryway to make it look good.

I’ve never seen this. I used plantation shutters instead for the side panels. Although some of your pictures are interesting (I like he second), the heavy drapery reminds of a funeral parlor.

I honestly can't imagine my DH even noticing or caring about this.

I don't like it. But whatever it is, I don't think you should do it if your husband hates it.

+1. I think if you already have the fussy/granny style going, it could theoretically look nice but it is not my taste. I also haven't seen it in real life and imagine it would be impractical with kids and dogs.
