New England doesn’t have the same appeal to many of today’s college students as it did 30-40 years ago. I love New England but the reality is that the “typical” UMC full-pay college student is just as likely to attend an SEC school now.

I disagree with your premise, OP. Obviously students tend to overwhelmingly apply to schools in their region. But the Boston schools have more out-of-state/out-of-region applicants than any other city.
