My kid got the JHU extension email too. He never added JHU to his Naviance or Common app or interacted with it in any way.

Last year there were all sorts of extensions at all sorts of school at all the application points. (ED, EA, RD). Some schools are notorious for doing this. For example, Michigan extends by an extra week or two every year and will still take apps after this. They like to get as many as they can.

JHU extended to 11/8 for my kid. Wonder if this is random or has some meaning to it.

Same for mine (11/8).

Poster: are you sure it was only to 11/4?

If an applicant didn't make a school her ED choice, why would she now suddently change her mind just because they extended the ED deadline?

My understanding is the applicant has to plan this out long ago, so that they have enough time to get a reasonaly good essay done in time, arrange the transcript to be sent, etc.

Am I missing something?

It is to catch those that would have ED’ed but felt they had insufficient time to get the ED app in by 11/1. So:

—Kid considered EDing to school1 but doesn’t think the supplemental essays are in final enough form by then so kid decides to not ED. Deadline is extended and kid EDs to school1.

- kid can’t decide bw schools as to where to ED so decides not to ED anywhere. ED App deadline to school3 is extended do kid reconsiders not EDing anywhere and EDs to school3.

Wrong. This is the opposite of this. You'd think it means this but in reality it is just to boost up their app numbers and then they will announce very soon this was their biggest year for apps ever and how their selectivity boosted and their acceptance rate is much smaller now.

So they didn’t get enough applications by the deadline…

No, this is not what happened. It’s:

- school gets more apps than ever before by 11/1 deadline

- school extends deadline

- school gets even more apps than ever before

- school announces biggest app year ever, making it more selective and harder to get into (which is then heavily advertised as such, reporting the massive number of apps and acceptance rate)

This has been going on for a few years and 100% is NOT bc apps were down for the schools doing this.

Columbia’s website doesn’t say they extended their deadline. Where did you see this?

This is obviously your first kid going through this. It happens every year. It’s not desperate. It’s common.

Doesn’t the person losing it over the teacher recommendation look silly now?

Happened to us at a well known school last year, take advantage of it if interested but it made no difference in outcome.
