When I was a kid I did this to deliver newspapers. My mom drove me around with the hatch open (station wagon) while I sat in there and tossed the newspapers to each house. It was great fun. It didn’t seem unsafe and I never fell out. But I probably would not do it now a days.

Our Pack and Troop does not do that, the kids walk to houses and pick up the food and bring it to the car that is trailing them slowly. Our houses are close to each other so this isn’t a hard thing to do. I can see that there are parents who think that it is fun for the kids to ride in the trunk and hop out but that would be unsafe and a liability issue so our units would not allow it.

We go to Scouting camporees and they always have reminders that kids cannot ride in the back of trucks and the like because there are people who see that as fun and love doing it. It is illegal in some states and a liability issue regardless of legality but it is fun and different so some folks like to do it.

I would ask for your kid to go with a group where kids are walking and not sitting in the trunk. I am guessing that there is a parent or two who thinks it is cool and others that don’t.

I have a younger scout who put all the stickers out yesterday morning. So the kids are fifth grade and younger.

We were in a neighborhood where the houses average 1+ acre, so they are spread out. Very little traffic.

When we went down dead end side streets, we drove to the end and then had the kids each take a side of the street and run mailbox to mailbox. We had the doors to the mini van open and drove very slowly in case they needed to hop in. On the main neighborhood road we closed the doors.

Some of the others cars in our group did have kids in the trunks and they hopped out.

Honestly it felt completely safe, even with the younger kids. But it wasn’t a busy neighborhood.

What I've seen is kids walking, the parent drives with the trunk open. If far between houses, the kids sit in the back seat.
