Mistake? I guess your view is high stats kids should settle on UVA even if they don’t want to ED there bc they have a good chance for admission there compared to the school they really want.
I know several who have ended up at a much lower ranked school because they shot their ED shot too high and then got boxed out of the good EA’s. It’s a common story. Kids who, in hindsight, should have just ED’d to UVA. It’s a known risk.
You know several kids, their stats, round of application, where the ended up and the quality of each institution? Wow. Thats impressive.

Except for a few schools (like McGill in Canada which is numbers only) it's not a scientific equation. It's holistic. If someone has top stats but their teacher recs make them sound self-absorbed or not empathetic, some schools won't admit. They really are looking for consistency across essays/teacher and counselor recs/interviews if applicable/videos if applicable. They aren't just looking for high grades, high SAT, top rigor. A lot of those people without hooks or without an especially appealing personality/character as demonstrated by letters/essays/activities makes it to the final rounds but ultimately gets cut.
As parents, I know we are all trying to make sense and find patterns to predict what is a very subjective grading process without patterns. We have to accept that we just can't know what is going to happen and that's ok.

Going to UVA is a common mistake as well.
I disagree. It's not necessarily a mistake to ED, IF that college is your top choice and you're confident it’s the best fit academically, socially, financially.

For Top 20s it’s all about your spike/ECs. You have to be singularly focused in a particular area and have impressive talents, skills or achievements. Or have legacy status LOL!

A lot depends on what APs were taken. Also, Naviance shows gpa at time of graduation. Usually it’s lower when they apply in the fall. Regular job or volunteer, or did they hold leadership positions?

Where did they end up?
Ended up with 8 acceptances. Attending UMD with some merit. CS major. Loves it there, so it all worked out.
