My kid is getting a lot of these from really high ranked schools. Kid is a NMSF and has a very high SAT score.

Just don't make the mistake of believing this means your kid will be admitted.

Yes they are. Every application contributes to the all-important acceptance rate golf competition.

HYPSM does not care about yield. What these 5 are doing is more to attract a diverse student population to apply.

Outside of HYPSM, yield is the main motivation.

Schools buy these lists and send away. Vanderbilt has sent my sophomore two sets of junk mail. Nothing from UChicago yet nor Northeastern. The admissions department exists to maximize the number of applicants from which they could choose.

That's why Yale is coming to our high school next week. I doubt that they really intend on admitting anyone from our school, but that's the name of the game.

That's not my admissions exists. The marketing team at the university wants to get the word out about the school, but admissions it's solely there to drive up applications. That's a pessimistic and uninformed opinion, but not factual.

Huh?

You need to read the amazing letter that a high school kid wrote in reply to one of these, c.1997, about the time I was in high school, and featured on NPR’s Car Talk. Shall I find it?

More and more I’m realizing it’s basically a data mining racket.

Data mining is one of CB’s core functions. There’s no secret about that.
