I do feel t-shirts used to be a lot better in like the 90s but I guess quality of clothes has gone down across the board since then. I also think part of the issue is that they now try to make new tees that feel super soft and worn in from the moment you buy them, and back then we used to buy thicker cotton tees and just wear them until they were soft and draped perfectly.
I love the Everlane box cut tshirt. They have a nice cut and length, and the material is thick enough that it doesn’t get little holes (but not so thick that it is stiff).

I also like these. They are very good under a blazer with jeans. They are heavier fabric and longer, fitted. I also have some from Lands End and some from J Crew that are similar. Some of hte J Crew ones have weirdly long/fitted short sleeves though which can be a little annoying depending on what you're wearing it with.
I feel like there are two critical questions to assess what KIND of tee you want You want either shortish and cropped or fitted and longer. (For me, only fitted and longer so my middle aged belly doesn't pop out.) And you want either a thicker material (smooths out bumps and less likely to get holes) or a thinner material (often more comfy/soft, adds less bulk under sweaters). It's like 4 different items, and that's before you add v-neck, crew-neck, boat-neck or scoop neck.

Target’s A New Day micro ribbed tees are my favorite. Fit perfectly and super cheap (I think like $12?) so once they start to wear down I replace them and don’t think twice about it. Better quality than Madewell or Jcrew. Banana Republic has a nice thick cotton but that doesn’t layer as well, it’s better for draping when the top is the center piece of the outfit.

Want to add. Both Uniqlo and COS keep their shape. The neck stays flat and perfect after repeated washes. The fabric is not thin (you won’t see your bra!). I love both. COS is a bit boxy in shape. No holes either after 16 months. Highly recommend.

J. Crew Factory's essential tee was amazing this past summer.
The last tee I had from LL Bean was thick, but shrunk a ton.
