Of Connecticut College's attributes, its highly regarded arboretum and strong botany program are two that may deserve special mention.

If your kid wants a SLAC and is not in the range for stronger ones (like bates/colby/bucknell) this is a fine option. It felt sort of like a boarding school campus. New London sort of sucks but you're close to the beach. This would not have been a fit for my kid, too small and not a ton of rigor. I get the sense it's a lot of full-pay bottom 25% of their class kids from fancy privates or kids who want to go there for a sport or a very specific program.

To add, it is a 10-15 minute drive to several beautiful beaches, Harkness state park is breathtaking, and I would certainly not label the area as a negative compared to the locations of many other SLACs.

I wouldn't call New London remote in the way a rural college is remote, but it's definitely got New England coastal vibes. Looking at metro population, seems to be similar in size to Burlington, VT, Hagerstown, MD and Lancaster, PA.

A student I know that recently graduated is very artsy and community-minded. I also recently met a current student majoring in a science and she's involved in research with a professor, athletics (not a recruited athlete), and was very kind and articulate.

Agree with the poster saying their child didn't think they'd fit in because they're "rowdy," which is how my DD feels.

We found the campus to be pretty and the tour guide we had was the most articulate and delightful student we met on all these tours. My DH, DD, and I all commented to each other afterwards on how impressed we were with her. She was involved in many different activities - niche science research with a prof, dance, student newspaper leadership. My DD ultimately did not apply because the school vibe felt kind of gentle and DD is rowdy and didn't quite seem a fit. But seemed like a nice place for kids who'd like a nurturing environment with a warm vibe.

Did your kid apply to any of those that you toured? wondering which felt most like her given her vibe.

I think Conn is a great option for someone who wants a LAC experience. Very different than what you get at UCONN. My DC was accepted last year, but ended up at a different NESCAC school. Conn and Trinity are the only NESCAC schools that offer merit aid, so this might make it more attainable for donut hole families. I especially liked the intentional engagement the Career Services center has with first years. DC liked the arts scene, and how easy it is to be involved in music. The campus is lovely.

Be careful if you're a male zeroing in on this school because of the advantageous gender ratio. The Coast Guard Academy is right next door, and those men in uniform provide plenty of competition for the talent on campus.

Their yield appears to be a lot less than 20%.
Not selective.

My DS is strongly considering for this cycle (for a sport). The campus is lovely and the arboretum is amazing - even if not considering the school it's worth a walk through if anyone is driving by. During DC's visit, the team went to the beach and a cute breakfast place downtown. I was impressed and did not think I would be. Library also nice for a school of that size. Likely will end up elsewhere, however, because does not have DS's major. Too bad though!
