We recently went to a fall preview day there and fell in love. It’s now DD’s #1 choice. We’re not Catholic, but like the Jesuit philosophy. They require 1 ethics course (doesn’t have to have anything to do with religion) and 1 theology course (which they say is taught from a historical perspective). Nice dorms and guaranteed housing on campus all 4 years so you don’t have to worry about finding housing in Baltimore.

My DC is a senior at American, and it's been a great experience. It has the benefits of being in a vibrant city with a beautiful campus in a great neighborhood, unlike GW. I've heard of some students getting rejected for SIS (School of International Studies) - it's a competitive major. If you are interested in a different major, it should be easier. The food is notoriously bad, so budget for a lot of eating off campus. School sports not great but you can go to local Wizards, Commanders, Capitals games instead.

I’ve heard lovely things about U Mary Washington. That’d be about an hour away. As would any Baltimore/Bmore area schools.

American so be an easy admit though (we are looking at it for our DC with much lower stats)

What is your kid interested in studying?

There are a lot of great suggestions here. Also look at schools accessible via Amtrak. Both Delaware and William & Mary are right by the train stations, but I understand they may still be too far away.

It sounds like you are VA in-state? If so, just to remind that GMU is slightly over $33k all in, whereas American is $80k and George Washington is $92k. Our DD, too, needed to be close to home. We didn’t have the luxury of looking at private versus in-state VA. DC had a great four years living in the dorms at GMU, rarely came home and took advantage of GMU’s five satellite campuses including Korea. please don’t write off a campus just because your kid hears some crap at school about 13th grade. GMU is enormous - they are never going to see their high school friends. Also, what major?


Oh definitely no disrespect to GMU- we both think it is a great school. It is just that we live like 5 min away and have spent a lot of time there already. The kid has had a few years of very rough breaks so if we can make it work we are going to try to help them. Not sure of major yet but probably need to start thinking of it.


What about Shenandoah University or another nearby VA school?

Also look at NVCC with auto admit to all VA state schools if you hit the requirements. Could be a good option if things could improve over the next couple of years.

My kid- boy, SAT in low 1500’s, 3.8 uw from a solid but not absolute top private, a step below in rigor. We were full pay. Got Merit aid at both GW and American. Chose somewhere else but both of us liked American!

Don't know how close you need to be, but you could look at UMD. From our home in Fairfax, it's 50-60 min each way. As others have mentioned, Shenandoah and Marymount. Mary Washington is in Fredricksburg.
