If you want to be competitive in this insane job market, you gotta learn how to market yourself.

I recently got a job offer, so speaking from experience.

Why not? It is pretty good in rewriting your resume to match a particular job description. There is AI on the other side which is looking for certain keywords, matches.

Do tell me how to market myself. Before this year I sent out numerous resumes and heard nothing. I removed the last 20 years from my resume to appear younger. I'm a software developer approaching 60.

Has anyone applied outside DC?

Anti AI poster that got recently hired here.

Ok. That's a start. Unfortunately, ageism is real.

Software engineer...first you need a portfolio to prove you can do the job. Do you have a website showing off your skills?

Do you have an active LinkedIn? Profile filled out with keyboards? Do you post weekly/monthly to market yourself? Do you comment on posts for companies you want to work in? Connect with people working where you want to work?

Other than that...your resume/cover letter (if asked) need to show accomplishments with metrics. Does your resume read like a job duty or tailored results related to the company and position you are applying to?

Who has time to look at his website or LinkedIn posts. In fact, who has time to look at his and the other 299 applications for the position? It must go through some automated filters. Your advice to tailor the application to the position is spot on but AI can do it if you provide it with a detailed resume. Of course, if you have an internal contact who can put your resume in front of the hiring manager it would be more effective than AI

Hiring managers and recruiters are looking at portfolios. Just add it to your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn. They are also looking for skilled workers sharing their expertise online on LinkedIn or other online sites.

For my new job, I could see that my boss visited my portfolio and linkedin.

I've had recruiters reach out to me for other jobs based on having specific keywords on my LinkedIn.
I've had people email me because they found my old online tutorials (I've been slacking and haven't updated it in years) and asked me for more information...imagine if I kept my blog updated and a recruiter/hiring manager finds my page...they would probably hit me up for an interview if they had an opening because I proved I could do the job already.

That's why I also mentioned work on networking and making internal contacts now.

But look, do what y'all want. Keep just mass applying with AI resumes and see what happens. Maybe it will work out for you. Just trying to give advice from someone else in the tech field that got hired this year. Shrugs.

Good luck.

Your resume and cover letter is just going to look like everyone else doing the same thing with AI.

Many of us have been there, OP. Hang in there. I am currently in a position. I have little to no education or training for. The first time I was laid off I supplemented my application with some fairly easy certifications in Power BI PI, and project management.
These are things that traverse many fields/industries.

Good luck!

OP, I’m so sorry you are going through this awful time. I know it doesn’t help but you are not alone. There are so many of us who are searching and running on fumes and anxiety. With compassion I would ask if you have spoken to your doctor about how your emotional state right now. You sound v depressed which is understandable but you can get some help with that, assuming you aren’t already, which will help make everything more bearable. There is nothing harder than going into a demanding round of interviews when you are feeling awful about life in general. Figure out your toolkit and strategy so you can maximize your chances of having something work out. The fact that you actually got an interview in this terrible market says something. Don’t give up.

Just use AI, it will tailor better than you do

As someone who’s done hiring/interviews, most people give interviewees grace: it’s an awkward, stressful interaction no matter how you slice it. I’m sure you did great. Praying for you.

I fully get all of this. My husband is going through the same thing but for even longer. In terms of the tailoring of resumes and cover letters, AI can really help lesson some of the monotony and tediousness of this.
