People who can’t find a job better than a federal government job want it.
You should ask: why current federal government employees do not leave their federal government jobs in the current environment? The answer is: if they could get a better non-federal government job, they will do. But they can’t.

Piss off. I took a 50% paycut to take my federal job because I believe in what I am doing. I could easily get a better paying job with better hours and less stress (especially with what the current administration is subjecting us to), but I could never have the same impact in the private sector. Even many lower paid civil servants doing menial jobs could get "better" jobs, but value their contribution to this country.

50% pay cut??? I have a hard time believing that

DP. 15 years ago I went from making 185k as a third year biglaw associate to 92k as a GS-13 staff attorney. Took 12 years and a competitive promotion to get up to a high enough GS-15 step to equal that third year salary.

DP. I took this kind of pay cut too. I tried to negotiate to only 50% pay cut. $250k in private, plus bonus, to $120k starting in federal sector.

Same here. This is not hard for me to believe at all. I went from $180 in the private sector (not including bonus) to a GS12 (@ $112). It was a huge financial hit, but I did it for the mission and opportunity. It was a wonderful job even though I worked much harder and longer hours as a civil servant than in the private sector

It’s not just new employees who are affected by the hiring freeze though. We can’t move employees around the agency to fill gaps where they are needed most (gaps caused by resignations and RIfs). So much for efficiency.

(b) Strategic Hiring Committees. Within 30 days of the date of this order, each agency head shall establish a Strategic Hiring Committee to approve the creation or filling, as applicable, of each vacancy within their agency. The Strategic Hiring Committee shall include the deputy agency head and the chief of staff to the agency head, along with such other senior officials as the agency head may designate. The Strategic Hiring Committee shall ensure that agency hiring is consistent with the national interest, agency needs, and the priorities of my Administration. Agency Strategic Hiring Committees shall provide written notice of approved hires to OPM following the approval of such hires.

(c) Annual Staffing Plans and Quarterly Updates.

(i) Within 60 days of the date of this order, each agency shall prepare an Annual Staffing Plan, in coordination with OPM and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), to ensure that new career appointments in the upcoming fiscal year are in the highest-need areas and aligned with the priorities of my Administration.

Sigh. So we wait until 2029 to restore sanity.

Yes, lifted but you need God's approval to fill a vacancy so good luck with that.
