College is exactly the same. High test scores are a dime a dozen.

Why? And what are the personal qualities you think are worthy?
Like curious, kind, eager to learn and help others? Not just running super fast.
Tell me you are applying to K without telling me you’re applying to K.
lol, exactly. As if a kid that is a good athlete can't be any of those things.
I went to a top 15 school and that had a good D3 sports program. Many of the kids wouldn't have gotten into the school but for athletics. Want to know what most of those kids are now - Doctors, Lawyers, CEO of a top 50 company. Some donate big dollars back to the school. That's why schools do this.

Anonymous wrote:People often talk about how you need a hook for Big 3 admissions for high school. One of the ones always mentioned is sports. Can someone provide any insight as to how sports help the 9th grade admissions process? Does merely playing sports at the middle school level competitively help in admissions when people talk about sports being a hook? Or is there a specific skill level and sport that it has to be? For example, my daughter is a pretty competitive runner, xc and the mile, at the private middle school meets, but not state level (if that exists) and not at the travel level (does that exist for running?)

1)they're looking to full certain rosters to be competitive and keep up school spirit for students and alums (and donations from the later. this is pretty much just applied to boys in football and basketball.
2)they're look for kids who they can get into college as athletic recruits. this is where cross country and most girl athletes come into play
the reality is that even the top high schools will only get a small handful of kids into elite colleges on grades alone. they can get another half dozen or dozen in based on sports recruiting. they need these recruits to stay relevant to the next generation of parents who will come along and say "oh my, this school sent 5 kids to Yale, let me get in line to pay my $60k!"

How is being a talented athlete different from being a talented musician?

When you run your own school, you can set the standards however you like. For schools like the "big 3" the kids getting in have demonstrated the academic ability AND have some other talents that contribute to the school community. The idea that you assume that it is binary is sad.
