I applied to a private school and was offered a salary higher than MCPS’s offer.

I was talking to a teacher who was many years deep in dcpa pay scale and she joked about it being golden handcuffs

And I hope, treated much better! MCPS is very abusive- OP, be wary of any position that is posted now. In MCPS it’s often due to untenable working conditions. If a position is still open it may mean they couldn’t find a teacher at the end of last school year because it has such a reputation. Other times it can be legitimate leave (maternity, ect) where the teacher will come back, but more often than not, it’s the poorly managed or abusive schools that are open now.

Just a word of caution from a teacher.

Can’t you apply to the crappy school, get in, endure, and then transfer at the first opportunity?

Mcps has job security unlike privates.
No, this is terrible advice. As a new teacher in the county starting off at a bad school could mean the end of your run with the county. Only do sub work until the hiring season opens in March.
Also, be aware that you have to stay at the crappy school for two full years as a new teacher.

Not as an experienced teacher coming form outside MCPS. You are considered tenured after 1 year. You can also request an involuntary transfer any year.

They have increased the cap for external candidates a little bit. You will break even salary wise with private school versus MCPS. The biggest difference is the cost and quality of the health insurance at private versus public.

There no job security for teachers in MCPS because they put the blame on teachers ( new onea especially) who report the crime and promote admin who cover up crime. overworked and underpaid teachers also have to worry about vindictive and crooked admins amongst many other higher ups who need a scapegoat.

Sometimes when admin fire teachers for not playing ball with their schemes they will fire a teacher through non renewal and then lie to dllr and say you quit. Then when you say you quit on new resumes bc that's what they reported they might report that you were non renewed. I am just not sure why this is tolerated. Doesn't this constitute as fraud?

OP, first you have to apply to the general teaching or substitute job posting. Second, you have to apply to individual schools.

If you are having any issues, then reach out to Robert Watson, he is an HR coordinator.

robert_watson@mcpsmd.org

But as other precious posters mentioned, you must have been fingerprinted and your background cleared before principals will be able to hire you.

It's possible the principal checked with central office but since you were not cleared could not move forward with hiring you. Because it is central office that gives the clearance for hiring before a principal can offer you anything!

It has increased beyond 8 now, possibly 12. Financially, it’s worth it to keep looking in mcps. Try e-mailing an AP instead. Principals get hundreds of emails a day I bet and if that doesn’t work send an email to several different high schools to see if anything is coming up.

I’ll add to that and suggest cc’ing the entire admin team and the admin secretary.

As a PP stated, try private school. Or walk yourself with application in tow to the school where you are trying to work to meet with the Principal.

I recently applied to a long term sub for English (oh hi, I taught AP English for all of those years)… they not only didn’t get back to me, they reposted the position. Yes, I emailed the principal. If you’re wondering why your kids have subpar long-term subs, look at HR.

Are you already in the sub system? Been fingerprinted? Got cleared?

Yeah. So your point?
